About us
Andover Light Orchestra has about 40 members of all ages, drawn from a wide area centred on Andover.
Our line-up includes all the usual orchestral instruments, plus some band instruments such as saxophones which help to create our unique ALO sound.
We play a variety of music: light classics, music from the shows, film music, folk songs and dances, extracts from the romantic classics, and many others.
Our musical director Kevin Riley arranges music to match our line-up, as well as composing original pieces for us to perform.
We aim to to enjoy ourselves making music, practising instrument technique, and improving our musicianship and sight-reading by playing together with others.
History
The Orchestra was formed in the mid 1980s as a recreational evening class. Rehearsals were held in Bridge Street Methodist Church, with David Holland as conductor.
The demand for a place to play light orchestral music soon allowed the Orchestra to become a self-supporting organisation and to grow, first into a practice orchestra, and then into it’s present form.
The Orchestra’s inaugural concert was held at the church in November 1992.

Young Musicians
The orchestra is committed to promoting live music amongst young people, and we encourage applications for membership from young musicians.
We are able to give concerts for schools, where we include the school’s musicians and singers both individually and in joint items with the Orchestra.
Sponsorship
All donations can be acknowledged in concert programs and publicity materials.
We welcome offers of support from local businesses and individuals. This could be sponsorship of a whole concert, or meeting a smaller cost such as refreshments or new music.
